At Optimal Sleep Health, our mission is to help our patients achieve a full and satisfying sleep period every day, and to enjoy, as a result of this sleep, a full and active wakeful period each day.
Our methods include a thorough evaluation by a board-certified Sleep Medicine specialist, appropriate laboratory testing, and a combination of physical, medical and behavioral strategies to address the more than eighty identified sleep disorders. Optimal Sleep Health is affiliated with several sleep testing facilities from Bradenton to Port Charlotte, Florida for patients’ ease and convenience. Our practice also utilizes new technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, including home sleep testing equipment.
At Optimal Sleep Health, we value timely service, thorough evaluation, and effective treatment outcomes. Our compassionate staff is dedicated to providing the best possible care for every patient. We educate our patients and the community at large by providing up-to-date knowledge from the field of sleep research.
The field of Sleep Medicine continues to evolve after over fifty years of scientific research. We are committed to promoting advances in the field by our involvement in research projects to further the state of the science and art of practice.

Steven J. Scheer, M.D.
Steven Scheer, M.D. is a board certified specialist in Sleep Medicine, treating patients with a variety of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, snoring, restless legs, insomnia, and narcolepsy.
Dr. Scheer established Optimal Sleep Health after ten years of being the medical director of two sleep centers in Cincinnati and Sarasota. His goal is to have a center of excellence for all sleep problems, and to be able to address the dual needs of quality sleep and productive and joyful waking life. The new practice has several satellites in the region, allowing Dr. Scheer and his staff to evaluate and treat patients close to their homes.
Dr. Scheer graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He then studied Internal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, followed by residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Minnesota. He pursued an academic career for over 20 years. Dr. Scheer has written widely and published two textbooks in his field. He is now an emeritus professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Dr. Scheer pursued training in clinical sleep medicine in Cincinnati followed by additional training at Stanford University. He became Board Certified in Sleep Medicine in 2001. In 1998, 2004, and 2005, Dr. Scheer was selected by his peers for “Best Physicians in America” designations.
Always interested in educating the general public, Dr. Scheer has become a popular speaker throughout the community on all sleep-related topics. His other interests include golf, community theater, and hiking. Dr. Scheer lives in Sarasota with his wife. They have three grown daughters.
